The North Atlantic Treaty Organization, one of the most enduring inheritances of the end of the Second World War, has been depicted as the «most successful military alliance in history».
However, since the end of the Soviet threat, NATO has known several attempts to reformulate its commitment in the international politics’ arena by elaborating three Strategic Concepts in 1991, 1999 and 2010. With the introduction of the concept of Smart Defense, provided by NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen in February 2011, NATO has enlarged the spectrum of its global engagement in a more rational and specific way, by focusing on the conceptual binomial security-flexibility.
